Movement as Awakening Retreat: A Path of Embodied Insight

Movement as Awakening Retreat -
a Path of Embodied Insight

2 Day Immersive Retreat | February 15 & 16, 2025

About the Retreat

In this two-day movement retreat, we’ll explore presence and embodiment through the integration of Buddhist wisdom, mindful movement practices and somatic attunement. Kristina draws from her experience of dynamic “external arts” like karate and peak performance training, as well as contemplative “internal arts” such as Qi Gong, Tai Chi, meditation, and yoga. This retreat is designed for those seeking to explore or deepen a holistic approach to embodied practices supporting self-awareness, regeneration and radical self-compassion.
The retreat focuses on somatic practices that invite us to slow down and access the natural intelligence of our bodies and deepen our wakeful awareness. Through gentle, guided movement explorations, we’ll learn how subtle adjustments, movement patterns, conscious breathing, and energetic practice can release tension and anxiety.
Our days will flow between guided movement sessions and periods of silence and stillness. Within a safe and supportive environment, we will explore embodied themes grounded Buddhist philosophy and practice. There will be time for reflective inquiry and group dialogue, fostering a supportive space for personal insight and shared wisdom.
This weekend offers an opportunity to rest in present-moment awareness while developing a more compassionate relationship with our bodies and connecting with our innate vitality. The somatic practices can also serve as powerful supports for other contemplative practices.
All bodies and experience levels are welcome. Join us in discovering how movement-based practices can unlock natural pathways to presence and embodied wisdom. By the end of the retreat, participants will leave with practical tools for integrating these practices into daily life—mobility, wakefulness, regenerative movement and balance.

meet our retreat leader

Dr Kristina Mah (Renshi, 5th Dan Karate-ka; WKF karate world champion) is a martial artist, academic researcher, and creative artist. She has trained for over thirty years in Go-Ju Ryu karate and twenty years as an elite athlete representing Australia.

Kristina has recently shifted her focus to training in the internal arts. Kristina’s PhD focused on the theme of ‘compassion’ at the intersection of Buddhist philosophy and design and technology. She continues to work to integrate ancient wisdom traditions, emphasising embodied ways of knowing across varied contexts. Through diverse projects, including spiritual retreats and researching empathy in human computer interaction, Kristina aims to embed somatic, contemplative, and movement-based practices into research and practice, fostering self-cultivation and self-empowerment.

Kristina has organised the Lawudo Trek (lawudo-trek.org) since 2016 to raise money and awareness about Lawudo Gompa and Cave, a remote hermitage affiliated with the Foundation for the Preservation of the Mahayana Tradition (FPMT) in the Everest region of Nepal and she served on the Vajrayana Institute Committee between 2016-2018. In April 2025, Kristina will lead her own trek and retreat, Jagariya (jagariya.com) that aims to immerse participants in principles that will be shared from this retreat.

The Bliss of Mahamudra Retreat

The Bliss of Mahamudra Retreat

3 Day Immersive Retreat | January 25 – 27, 2025

About the Retreat

In this retreat, we will explore the important roles of pleasure and bliss that arise from meditation practice. Guided by meditation instructions from the Mahamudra lineage of the Gelug tradition of Tibetan Buddhism, we will examine how meditation on the mind’s nature can evoke both rapturous sensations and the peaceful happiness of contentment. In turn, we will investigate the many benefits these blissful experiences can bring—calming physical tensions and mental agitation, gathering scattered attention, uplifting low energy, and opening a doorway to deeper states of concentration.

The retreat will include guided and silent meditations, with explanations of the practices and time for Q&A and discussion.

calm abiding retreat

calm abiding retreat

3 Day Immersive Retreat | 5 – 7 October 2024

About the Retreat

Meditative concentration, also known as calm-abiding, is a state of mind where all the disturbances due to dysfunctional reactions of body and mind are pacified and we find our attention abiding blissfully on whatever object of meditation we focus on.

Contrary to popular beliefs, great effort and willpower are not necessary to accomplish it. Rather, the skillful and wise application of our mindfulness, coupled with the attitude of kindness and letting go, transforms our usual effortful struggle in meditation to an effortless process of settling deeply into concentration.

In this retreat we will look into creating the different conditions that facilitate the settling down of our body and mind, freeing them from the unnecessary tensions and agitation that disturb our peace and wellbeing.

Through applying simple techniques in our meditation practice we can readily enhance the release of physical tensions, the experience of pleasant sensations coming from our meditation, and the calming of our mental processes so much so that both body and mind can actually abide in a state of blissful engagement in meditation.

This in turn can benefit our life outside of meditation as we bring that sense of peace, calmness and mindful awareness into our daily interactions.
