The understanding of interdependence and its corollary, emptiness, is at the heart of the Buddha’s teaching of enlightenment and liberation from suffering. Through meditating on the six elements of earth, water, fire, air, space, and consciousness that constitute our notion of self, we get to explore how each of them does not stand on their own independently. Each of our elements is dependent on various conditions, in a state of flux and interchange between outer and inner, and ultimately cannot be claimed as a “me” or “mine.”
